New NAR Requirements

#1 Requires ALL members of the NAR Board of Directors to complete the President's Challenge (At Home With Diversity, Fairhaven, and Bias Override).

NAR's Board of Directors is composed of over 900 REALTORs who represent different geographic areas and specialties within the real estate industry, and all 900 of those leaders taking AHWD, Bias Override, and Fairhaven will have an undeniably positive effect on our industry.

#2 Requires ALL REALTORs to complete two hours of fair housing training on the same 3-year cycle as the Code of Ethics.

One of the keys here is that Fairhaven is going to be updated to meet the stated learning objectives and two-hour minimum time frame so that it can be included in the list of qualifying courses and serve as the no-cost option. I imagine MOST people will take that option since it's free and self-led, which again, will have an undeniably positive effect on our industry.

Both requirements have some "phase-in" time, but effectively all Directors will have to meet their requirement by 2025, and all REALTORs will have to meet their requirement by 2028, and will have to keep renewing that requirement every three years.

Directors Add D.E.I. and Fair Housing Education Requirement

Board Prioritizes Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Fair Housing Education for Themselves

May 11, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 11, 2023)—NAR’s board of directors has approved recommendations requiring board members to complete:

At Home With Diversity, a course to help real estate professionals work successfully in an increasingly diverse marketplace

Bias Override: Overcoming Barriers to Fair Housing, a course to help real estate professionals identify and interrupt stereotypical thinking to avoid fair housing pitfalls

Fairhaven, an online fair housing simulation

The requirements are phased in:

Directors serving in 2024 will be required to complete the three programs as a performance expectation by May 1, 2024.

Beginning with the 2025 board, completion of the programs will be a qualification for serving as a director.

The recommendations came from the Diversity Committee with the support of the Leadership Identification and Development Committee.

NAR’s D.E.I. Strategy includes an “Executive Commitment Pillar” with an objective of ensuring that NAR leadership is educated on D.E.I. The board previously adopted the same requirement for committee liaisons, Executive Committee members, Regional Vice Presidents, and the Leadership Team. Today’s decision expands NAR's executive commitment to D.E.I. education, ensuring that diversity, equity and inclusion are prioritized and built into our association structures.

New Fair Housing Training Requirement

NAR adds a three-year training cycle

May 11, 2023

Fair Housing

WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 11, 2023) — National Association of REALTORS® new-member applicants must now complete two hours of fair housing training and existing members must complete two hours of fair housing training every three years as a condition of REALTOR® membership, including one training option that is of no cost to members. The new requirement was approved by the association’s Board of Directors at its May 11 meeting. The three-year cycle coincides with NAR’s existing Code of Ethics training requirement and begins in 2025.

Courses satisfying the new NAR requirement are:

At Home With Diversity, a course to help real estate professionals work successfully in an increasingly diverse marketplace

Bias Override: Overcoming Barriers to Fair Housing, a course to help real estate professionals identify and interrupt stereotypical thinking to avoid fair housing pitfalls

Qualified equivalent courses provided by state and local associations, institutes, societies and councils, and their partnered providers

Qualified equivalent fair housing courses approved by state licensing authorities for an existing state fair housing requirement

A to-be-created non-residential practitioner course focused on bias and anti-discrimination training

Fairhaven, NAR’s online fair housing simulation, will also be updated to meet the stated learning objectives and two-hour minimum time frame so that it can be included in the list of qualifying courses and serve as the no-cost option.

The recommendation came out of a workgroup appointed by NAR's Member Policy and Board Jurisdiction Committee, which advanced the recommendation to the board. NAR's Association Executives, Professional Development, Diversity and Fair Housing Policy committees also voted in support of the new fair housing training requirement.

NAR's Fair Housing Action Plan: ACT! aims to ensure REALTORS® are doing everything possible to protect housing rights in America, with an emphasis on accountability, culture change, and training
