Do you agree with this New Mexico retirement destination ranking?

Much has been made by economic developers in recent years about the opportunity to market New Mexico to active retirees and older retirees. The state has the amenities they want, say business leaders — great weather and lots of housing options, golf courses and restaurants. And many retirees have what economic developers want, too — stability and money to spend.

With that backdrop comes one of the latest national rankings — the “best states for retirement.” Bankrate.com examined six factors in their ranking — cost of living, taxes, health care, weather, crime and residents’ overall well-being.

New Mexico’s weather was a big plus, but a high crime rate and low health care quality, according to the report, dragged its ranking down to No. 30. The best state for retirement was Wyoming, while the worst was New York. South Dakota, along with New Mexico’s neighbors Colorado and Utah ranked second, third and fourth, respectively.
