The Bernalillo County Commission seeks public input on a pending amendment that would require inspections of older septic systems in unincorporated Bernalillo County. The pending change to the county code would require the county’s oldest septic systems to be inspected and repaired or replaced, if necessary, to stop pollution in groundwater.
Today, roughly 750 septic systems in unincorporated Bernalillo County are at least 30 years old and would be subject to this proposed ordinance.
In general, homeowners would be required to pay for the cost of inspections to be performed by a private certified evaluator and pay for repairs if their septic system is failing. Once repaired and the system passes, then the next inspection would be due five years later.
