The council approval allows the city to cut impact fees in half for most developments and waive them for green projects that meet standards set by the city. Councilors Trudy Jones and Dan Lewis requested a 12-month extension of the reduced fees, but a six month extension was eventually approved and a second, six-month extension is still up for consideration.
During the meeting Jones and Lewis said, the city needs to re-examine how it goes about assessing impact fees. Critics say the fees vary too widely in different parts of the city. Impact fees are assessed to new developments to help pay for parks, roads, fire stations and other infrastructure. Older areas that already have parks enjoy lower fees, because the infrastructure is already built.
Councilors Debbie O'Malley and Rey Garduño voted against extending the fee reduction.
