GAAR Takes the REALTOR® Safety Pledge

Keeping Safety at the Forefront of Real Estate

Safety is not something real estate professionals should think about only when a concerning situation arises. It should be part of the plan before a showing, meeting, open house, property visit, or other interaction ever begins.

As part of that commitment, the Greater Albuquerque Association of REALTORS® has taken the National Association of REALTORS® REALTOR® Association Safety Pledge, joining associations across the country in making REALTOR® Safety an ongoing organizational priority.

NAR created the pledge to encourage REALTORS® and REALTOR® associations to keep safety top of mind and incorporate safe practices into everyday business protocols. (National Association of Realtors)

What GAAR Is Pledging

Through the Association Safety Pledge, GAAR commits to promoting REALTOR® Safety through its communications, media, governance, and actions, with the goal of supporting the safety of both members and the public.

Taking the pledge reflects something bigger than one class, one month, or one safety reminder. It reinforces GAAR's commitment to providing members with education, resources, and information that can help them think ahead and make personal safety part of how they conduct business.

Real estate can place brokers in situations that are different from many other professions. Members regularly meet new people, enter unfamiliar properties, work alone, hold open houses, visit vacant homes and land, and conduct business outside traditional office settings. Preparation matters.

Make Safety Part of Your Business Plan

NAR's individual REALTOR® Safety Pledge also encourages members to prioritize the well-being of themselves, their colleagues, clients, customers, and business partners. It emphasizes conducting business in a reasonably safe manner, continuing safety education, and sharing best practices with others.

That can begin with simple habits: letting someone know where you are going, verifying who you are meeting, remaining aware of your surroundings, planning an exit strategy, and trusting your instincts when something does not feel right.

A good safety plan should not wait until it is needed. By that point, preparation has already left the building.

Utilize the Safe Listing Form

NAR’s Safe Listings Form provides brokers and sellers with a framework for discussing safety before a property is listed. By identifying potential concerns and establishing safer showing practices from the beginning, brokers can make safety part of the listing process rather than waiting until a risky situation occurs.

REALTOR® Safety Is a Year-Round Commitment

September's REALTOR® Safety Month provides an important opportunity to revisit procedures and sharpen awareness, but safety should remain part of the conversation throughout the year.

GAAR's decision to take the REALTOR® Association Safety Pledge reinforces our commitment to keeping those conversations going and helping members develop habits that protect themselves, their businesses, their clients, and their communities.

Members can also take the individual REALTOR® Safety Pledge and explore NAR's additional safety resources, recommendations, and Safe Listings Form.
