The Multiple Listing Service is a critical part of the real estate marketplace, connecting brokers with accurate property information and helping create greater transparency for consumers. As the industry continues to evolve, the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) is placing greater emphasis on working with MLS organizations to protect and strengthen that system.
That collaboration is reflected throughout NAR's 2026–2028 Strategic Plan, which provides a framework for how the organization plans to work with MLSs, associations, brokers and other industry partners.
Building a Stronger MLS Partnership
One of NAR's priorities is to evolve its partnership with MLSs and collaborate on solutions that support members, consumers and the broader real estate marketplace.
Recent work highlighted by NAR includes:
- Establishing comprehensive MLS risk management frameworks with clear legal strategies
- Publishing practical MLS policy guidance to clarify rules and help support faster transactions
- Leading federal advocacy to protect the MLS ecosystem, its data and consumer access
These efforts are designed to help MLS organizations navigate an increasingly complex environment while continuing to provide the reliable data and cooperative marketplace real estate professionals depend on.
Supporting MLSs Through Legal and Policy Resources
NAR's work also includes helping MLS organizations better understand and manage legal risks. Following a comprehensive antitrust risk assessment of MLS policies, NAR developed recommendations and resources intended to reduce potential legal exposure while supporting the continued operation and value of the MLS.
Clearer policy guidance can also help create greater consistency across the industry, giving MLSs additional resources as they develop and enforce rules within their local marketplaces.
Advocacy for the MLS Ecosystem
Collaboration goes beyond policies and legal guidance. NAR is also using its national advocacy efforts to support the MLS model, including protecting access to real estate data and promoting a marketplace where consumers can access comprehensive property information.
For REALTORS®, that work supports the infrastructure behind everyday transactions. MLS data helps brokers accurately market properties, research the market, serve clients and cooperate with other real estate professionals.
A Strategic Framework for Continued Collaboration
NAR's 2026–2028 Strategic Plan provides a roadmap for continuing this work. Among its broader priorities are improving communication and resource sharing, strengthening partnerships throughout the REALTOR® organization and collaborating with industry partners on legal and policy issues.
Rather than MLS collaboration being a single initiative, the Strategic Plan creates a framework for NAR to continue building its relationship with MLS organizations and respond to changes affecting the marketplace.
As NAR carries out the plan, members can expect additional progress reports on MLS collaboration and the organization's other strategic priorities.
