
The next New Mexico Legislative Session is right around the corner, and the New Mexico Association of REALTORS® is prepared to advocate for policies that protect homeowners, promote property rights, and strengthen our state’s communities.
Each year, REALTORS® set legislative priorities that guide advocacy efforts at the Roundhouse. For 2026, the focus is on issues that directly impact housing, property ownership, and New Mexico’s economic future.
New Mexico Association of REALTORS® 2026 Legislative Priorities
- Development of New Housing Units
NM REALTORS® support legislation that expands housing supply by reducing barriers, streamlining permitting, and incentivizing diverse development to meet New Mexico’s growing needs. - Economic Development
NM REALTORS® support legislation that provides jobs and encourages investment. NM REALTORS® advance initiatives that support a healthy economy. NM REALTORS® support statewide broadband availability. - Housing Affordability, Availability, & Accessibility
NM REALTORS® support expanding affordable and accessible housing by increasing inventory and incentivizing diverse development, while opposing rent control measures that could hinder growth and limit housing opportunities. - Property Crime
NM REALTORS® advocate for private property rights and support legislation which protects property and property owners from trespassing, vandalism, and theft. Communities thrive when people and property are safe. - Property Insurance
NM REALTORS® support a robust & financially solvent property insurance industry with a wide variety of carriers to provide consumer choice in the marketplace. - Property Tax Policy
NM REALTORS® support fair and transparent property tax assessments, ensuring that tax policies are equitable and predictable. NM REALTORS® stand against any transfer taxes, excise taxes, and/or stamp taxes imposed on the sale or transfer of real property. - Water & Natural Resources
NM REALTORS® support legislation that ensure the availability of water and natural resources meet the needs of New Mexico and its people.
Housing is central to New Mexico’s quality of life and economic success. By addressing these legislative priorities, REALTORS® are working to ensure that more families can find affordable homes, communities remain safe, and property ownership continues to be a reliable foundation for building wealth.
