Say NO to Rent Ordinance O-25-88
Protect Homeowner Rights in Albuquerque!
Albuquerque City Council is considering Ordinance O-25-88—also known as the RENT Ordinance—and we need your voice to stop it.
This proposed law goes too far, adding costly regulations, legal risks, and serious threats to private property rights.
While we all support fair housing practices, this ordinance creates dangerous precedents that affect every property owner in the city.

Why You Should Oppose O-25-88:
- Government Overreach
The ordinance forces landlords into rigid lease terms, bans common fees, and dictates how rent is collected—undermining your right to privately contract. - Forced Registration & Data Disclosure
You’d be required to submit detailed rent history, vacancy rates, and unit-level information—raising serious privacy and security concerns. - Mandatory Relocation Payments
Landlords would be forced to pay relocation costs—even before appeals are settled. These costs could be abused and the expense will result in higher rents for everyone. - Risk of Mechanic’s Liens from Tenant Repairs
Under the ordinance, tenants can hire contractors without your approval, deduct the cost from rent, and if unpaid, those contractors can file a lien against YOUR property. - Landlord Rights Undermined
You would lose the ability to require renter’s insurance, screen companion animals by breed/size, or charge for online rent payments—all key tools in protecting your investment.
Bottom Line
This ordinance punishes responsible landlords, adds new layers of red tape, and could push small housing providers out of the market—making housing even harder to find.
