See the breakdown of tourism’s impact in each New Mexico county

The number of visitors to New Mexico and the dollars they spend have been growing year over year.

About 34 million people visited New Mexico in 2015, according to a reportreleased by the New Mexico Tourism Department. The study was conducted byTourism Economics, a Philadelphia and Oxford, England-based company that provides reports and forecasts for cities and places.

Direct visitor spending in New Mexico has grown six years in a row, hitting $6.3 billion in 2015, a 3.6 percent increase compared to 2014. And those visitors have a big impact on jobs and taxes. The study said one in 12 jobs in New Mexico is sustained by visitor spending, and tourism generated $629 million in state and local taxes in 2015.

But the tourism picture depends on each county. Some counties, such as Los Alamos County, saw tourism spending (which includes leisure and business travel) increase by double digits. Others, such as Hidalgo County, saw that same spending decrease by double digits.

The reasons may vary. Several counties where the oil industry is a major employer saw tourism decrease significantly, possibly because fewer businesspeople traveled to those destinations last year.
