In this week of Native American Heritage Month, we shift focus to who and where. We recognize the Indigenous nations of this land — New Mexico is home to 19 Pueblos, 3 Apache tribes, and the Navajo Nation (Diné).

- Isleta
- Jemez
- Laguna
- Nambe
- Ohkay Owingeh
- Picuris
- Pojoaque
- San Felipe
- San Ildefonso
- Sandia
- Santa Ana
- Santa Clara
- Santo Domingo (Kewa)
- Taos

Apache Tribes (3)

Navajo Nation (Diné)
- The Navajo Nation spans New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah and includes many chapters within New Mexico.
And “place” matters deeply: Indigenous teachings emphasize sacred relationships with our land, water, and community. As we go about our daily work throughout the city, we honor and recognize that we, Burquenos, stand on land taken by the Tewa people and stewarded by generations of Indigenous people.
We, GAAR members, are committed to listening and learning. Below is a local Indigenous‐owned business that exemplifies culture grounded in place — we encourage you to check it out, learn more, and support it if you can.
Itality Plant Based Eatery owned by Tina Archuleta from Jemez Pueblo. Ital is a Rasta way of being and involves eating natural and unprocessed food. By bringing the Ital movement into Itality, Tina hopes to help people, especially in Pueblo communities, live healthier lifestyles while treating the Earth with compassion and respect. Hope you can make it for a meal at Itality soon!
