These young entrepreneurs want to ‘make Albuquerque cool again’

The businesses under Zach Gold and Matt Biggs are varied. They have their hands in several ventures, including a brewery, fitness studios, a gym and most recently, a co-working space.

When asked if there’s a theme linking all their dealings, they easily admit there’s not. The ventures span different industries, and are in different parts of town from Downtown to the Sawmill district to an industrial area.

Gold said he and Matt are just interested in doing fun projects, and things they think are good for the city.

“We’re trying to make Albuquerque cool again,” Gold said.

Gold and Biggs grew up in Santa Fe. Zach went to the University of New Mexico and decided to stay, despite so many of his friends leaving the state.

“All of our friends from high school and college left. So all of our projects lean toward making the city cooler,” Gold said.

Matt Biggs is part of a group of people that started Red Door Brewing Co. in 2014. The brewing company later opened a taproom on the bottom floor of the Simms Building in Downtown Albuquerque this year.

Gold and Biggs are also behind Sandia CrossFit in the Sawmill District, and they own Simms Fitness Downtown, too.

Most recently, the duo along with several investors opened the Simms Space, co-working offices, in the Simms Building. The venture cost between $400,000 and $500,000.

Gold said the co-working space idea came from the realization that despite Albuquerque having a vibrant entrepreneurial scene, there weren’t as many co-working spaces compared to what you see in other metros. Albuquerque has the FatPipe ABQ in East Downtown, as well as several business incubators.

“I felt like it was an obvious niche we could fill,” Gold said.

Gold said despite not advertising yet, the Simms Space already has 20 to 25 members who were early adopters of the idea and wanted in.

Memberships range from $190 per month for open seating to $890 for a private office. Click here to read the original article.
