On July 25, users discovered that some shared Claude AI conversations and Artifacts were appearing in public search results.
The issue affected chats that had been intentionally shared using Claude's "Anyone with the link" option. While these were not private conversations that had been hacked or leaked, many users did not expect shared links to become searchable through search engines.
Anthropic, the company behind Claude AI, quickly updated the platform to prevent Google from indexing newly shared conversations. However, during the time those links were publicly searchable, other search engines, AI platforms, and web crawlers may have indexed or scraped the content. As a result, some previously shared conversations may still be discoverable through other services or cached search results.
For real estate professionals, this is an important reminder to carefully review what information is entered into AI platforms. Client names, transaction details, property information, contracts, and MLS data should never be shared publicly or included in conversations that could become accessible to others.
If you use Claude AI, we recommend taking a few minutes to:
- Review your Shared Chats and Artifacts for anything that was shared using the "Anyone with the link" setting.
- Unshare any conversations or Artifacts that should no longer be publicly accessible.
- Search your browser for unique phrases from previously shared chats to determine whether they may still appear in search results.
- Avoid entering confidential client information, MLS data, transaction documents, financial information, passwords, or other sensitive business information into AI conversations that may be shared.
This incident highlights an important lesson for anyone using generative AI tools. Features labeled "Anyone with the link" should be treated as public publishing tools, not private collaboration features. Before sharing an AI conversation, consider whether you would be comfortable with that information being viewed beyond its intended audience.
As GAAR and SWMLS continue evaluating AI integrations and policies, protecting MLS data and subscriber information remains a top priority. Thoughtful use of AI helps ensure both innovation and responsible stewardship of the information our members are entrusted to protect.
